British Karate Federation International Open 2014
On the same day as our most recent bag-pack, September 27th, three Wado UK youngsters made the trip up to Glasgow for the British International Open Karate Championships. The Dhesi siblings Teerth, Charan and Amrit, all traveled up on the Friday ready for an early start in the Saturday competition. Despite the Ryder cup being held in the City at the same time, numbers of attendees for the karate seemed not to have been effected. Many of the categories were conducted over two pools because of the volume of competitors. Teerth and Charan were to fall foul of this, as each of them went out one round before the medal matches in all of their kata and Kumite categories. Extremely disappointing, but we should look on the positives as they both won several matches to get where they did. Clearly they are knocking on the door of success at this level and with continued commitment and determination they could make the leap to success. Teerth actually missed out on his open event in the Kumite as the day was dragging on and the prospect of a five hour drive home saw them leave the event before his category started. Teerth was clearly upset by this as for this year that was his last opportunity for British success.
Amrit on the other hand was to fair better. For the third year running he managed to medal in both his kata and Kumite events, with a gold and silver respectively. Although his draws were more favorable than those of his brother and sister, he had to work hard for the medals. His strong and determined approach at this stage is what the judges like about his kata performances, and this attitude also helps with his Kumite. Having won enough matches to get to the final of both disciplines, securing at least one of the gold medals was a pleasing result. His open Kumite category unfortunately didn't go the same way as he was soon knocked out of the competition. However another great day for the 8 year old with many more opportunities for the future.
Well done to all three youngsters.
