English Karate Federation National Championships 2011

Over the weekend of April 16th & 17th, the EKF held their National Championships at the Ponds Forge International Sports centre in Sheffield. Wado UK had several competitors at the event and the group had secured three Bronze medals by the end of the competition.

Our medal winning trio were the only local individual medallist’s at the event. Harry Oetegenn 14 from the Woodford Dojo and Matthew March 17 from the ShinKen Dojo matched their senior captain Barry Meanwell in securing individual bronze medals at the competition.

The Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield was the venue for the championships and they took place over the weekend of 16th & 17th April. This venue has been used for several years now and offers an arena of six areas, essential for the volume of competitors taking part.

The first medal for the trio went to Matthew in the Junior (16-17 yrs) Male Kata event. This was the second time he has won a podium finish at this National event and shows his consistency in preparation and development. This second time success was matched by Harry who secured his second bronze in three years in the cadet Kumite events also.

The pair then offered support to their captain Barry who was competing in the senior male categories. This was continued preparation for Barry who will be shortly flying off to Zurich for the European Senior Championships. Their good luck rubbed off on Barry who secured the third of the trios medal haul.

This was a great performance for the Hull trio at such a prestigious event. It also helped put Hull on the National Karate Map.

Other Wado UK competitors at the championships were;
Thomas Balaam-Reed, Joe Munro, Jessica Bates, Nathan Bates, Chris Fenton, Jessica Newton and Ashleigh Clarkson.
