AMA Yorkshire Open Championships Nov 2006

AMA Yorkshire Open Championships Nov 2006 Three junior members and one senior member of John Moreton’s, Woodford Karate Club travelled to Bradford on Sunday 26th November, for the AMA Yorkshire Open Karate Championships.

The juniors were regulars Jake Newlove and Phillip Weeks, with newcomer Joe Munro. Club captain Barry Meanwell was the senior taking part.

First events as usual were the Kata (Forms) and all four team-mates were up simultaneously in their respective divisions. Jake and Phillip were in the same category being of similar age and grade. Both boys are regular medallists in this event but the end of this competition it was to be Phillip who came away with a bronze medal on this occasion.  Joe was also competing in what was his first big competition and also earned himself a bronze medal. Barry was last to compete in the senior male Kata event. Being no stranger to medal positions he was determined to keep up the trend the boys had set and managed to put him-self into bronze medal position also.

Following on from the Kata were the Kumite (Fighting) events. With all four team-mates competing again, there was a good chance of more medals to come.

The juniors were first up again in separate divisions, but on this occasion all were to fall at various stages falling short of the medal positions.

That left Barry being the last Woodford competitor of the day in the senior male division. Receiving an injury to his leg in the early rounds made things difficult, but Barry is a determined competitor with a wealth of experience. Showing no sign of weakness he managed to fight his way to a second well-earned bronze medal for the day in the men’s open weight division. Two medals for Barry and one each for Phillip and Joe was a pleasing result and a great prospect for the Woodford Karate club as they prepare for the British Wado Ryu Karate Union Championships in early December at the Goole Leisure Centre.
