English Karate Federation National's 2015

Clubs which represented Wado UK at the recent English Karate Federation Championships were the Chikara Dojo, the East Hull Woodford Dojo, the Shinken Dojo and the Zanshin Dojo. Individuals representing their clubs and therefore Wado UK were Thomas Balaam-Reed, Jakub Lutwiejko, Oliver Dearing, Teerth Dhesi. Amie Newton, Joel Edgar, Ben Harrison, Ellie Hayes, Jordan Taylor, and Joe Rose and CHris Fenton. Two of the clubs would be returning home with medals, Chikara and Shinken, and one of those would have a National Champion, the Shinken Dojo.

A new format was the order of the day for 2015, with many of the extra and unnecessary categories now a thing of the past. The idea being to more fully represent what actually happens in Europe and the World. This meant that almost all of the divisions were representative of WKF events, with most of those having evening finals too. This is definitely the way forward as it will help prepare our top English competitors for what is ahead of them if they are selected for International competition.

The competition itself saw the Saturday used for all Kata events, along with the 12-13 years, under 21’s and senior team Kumite events. Our successes in kata came from Jordan Taylor of the Shinken Dojo, who in the junior division managed to become national champion winning our only gold of the competition. Club mate Ben Harrison was also in the medals though, as he managed to secure bronze in his cadet category. We had other representation in kata from Oliver Dearing, Teerth Dhesi, Thomas Balaam-Reed, Amie Newton, Ellie Hayes and Joel Edgar who all gave it their best efforts but unfortunately didn't share Jordan and Ben’s podium success. Well done on their efforts though.

Kumite success was down to Jakub Lutwiejko from the Chikara dojo. Jakub was competing in his 12-13 years section and hung in there long enough to leave for home wearing a creditable bronze medal. Other Kumite competitors included Oliver Dearing, Teerth Dhesi, Joe Rose, Joel Edgar and Chris Fenton.

Well done all of our medal winners and let us hope that this success can be bettered at the upcoming British Championships in Glasgow in May.
