Mushindo Wado & Open Kata Championships 2013

The Mushindo Kata Championships changed format slightly this time around. On this occasion the organiser included two competitions in one. That is to say there was a Wado Competition, and an Open Competition run simultaneously.

The Chikara Dojo attended along with the East Hull Woodford Dojo, with most of our students actually entering both sections. By the end of the day our group had done so well, they had actually finished in top slot and came home with the overall winners trophy. With a medal tally of 8 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze, it's not hard to see why we came out on top!

The successful squad are pictured below, with team trophy

The day started with Wado categories being held on one tatami, while the Open categories were held on a second. This did at times mean quick shuffles between one tatami and the other were needed, but with assistance from several parents Steve Balaam-Reed managed to pull it off.

First up were the under 9s beginner to 7th kyu and we were to see immediate success with Amrit Dhesi taking Silver in the Open Kata and Silver in the Wado. Thomas Fitz-John was to gain Bronze in the open where he went one step better than his team mate Logan foster, who was displaced during the repechage.

Charan Dhesi was in the next section, because although the same age as the first group, her 6th Kyu grade sent her into a higher group. She was to perform well enough however, to win Gold in the open section, and silver in the Wado section.

Age 10-12 was split into boys and girls on the Wado side and remained mixed on the Open sections. In the Wado event the Boys medals went to Calum Longmuir Taking Gold with Teerth Dhesi taking Bronze and in the Girls it was Silver for Lauren Foster and Bronze for Lauren Horner. Then Calum was to add to his medals by entering the 3rd Kyu and above Boys 10-12 years Wado event, and despite being a green belt was to pick up a Bronze medal for his efforts.

In the Open event it was to be Wado Uk 1 2 & 3 with Lauren Foster pipping Teerth Dhesi in the Final and Lauren Horner picking up a credible bronze. Isabelle Johnson and Calum Longmuir unlucky not to medal going out in the repechage.

Unfortunately Thomas Balaam-Reed was not to medal in the 13-15 yrs 3rd Kyu and above boys but did get to perform the Kata Ryu Sei for the first time in competition.

In the veterans events Paul Foster and Scott Longmuir picked up Gold and Silver in the below 4th Kyu event and Tracy Balaam-Reed was to gain Silver in the 3rd Kyu and above male and Female combined veteran event.

In the Pairs and teams Wado uk was to dominate all the sections that we entered. The pairs consisted of Chikara A (Lauren Foster, Lauren Horner), Chikara B (Calum Longmuir, Isabelle Johnson) and East Hull Woodford (Teerth & Charan Dhesi). The medals fell as follows in the Wado event Chikara A Gold with Chikara B and East Hull Woodford taking the joint Bronze medal slots.
In the Open event, Chikara A took the Gold, Chikara B the Silver, and East Hull Woodford the Bronze.

The Teams were Chikara (Lauren Foster, Lauren Horner, Calum Longmuir) and East Hull Woodford (Teerth, Charan, and Amrit Dhesi). In both the Wado and Open events it was to be Chikara Gold and East Hull Woodford Silver result.

A total of 8 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze was enough for the Wado UK Squad to take the team of the tournament trophy.
