On sunday 31st October 2010, Wado UK played host to around 250 of the English Karate Federation’s more competitive members. The Karate group were holding their Hull & East Yorkshire Open Karate Championships for the second year running. Numbers of competitors and spectators were up on last year, a sure sign that Wado UK and this, their flagship competition is held in high regard. Thirty one groups were represented at the event, with some of the competitors travelling from as far as Ipswich and London to the South and Cowdenbeath, Scotland in the North. Several England Internationals were among the competitors, the younger ones using the event as a spring board to the Junior European Championships in February, which will be held in Turkey. Many local Wado UK clubs were in attendance too, as well as several local clubs not attached to the Wado UK Karate Group. Competitor’s ages ranged from 5 years up to those in their 40’s and they were offered a total of 48 categories according to their ages and experience.
It was a long day, starting at 9.40am, slightly behind schedule and finishing at 7.45pm, again slightly beyond the anticipated finish time. This again was proof that the event has quickly become so popular that an entire day was needed to satisfy the numbers of competitors.
The day was a tremendous success and all the groups who contacted the organisers following the event said they will be back next year. Some saying they will be bringing bigger squads next time around. This is encouraging for Wado UK, who will begin planning the next event almost immediately. This is likely to be at a venue which can accommodate a fourth area, meaning that an earlier finish can be more easily achieved.

President of Wado UK Mr. John Moreton was to give a competitor of the day award out on the day. However, having noticed two Kumite competitors who for him stood out, the decision was made to award two awards rather than the intended one. The first of these awards went to Harley Delrio from Kenyu Kai, with the same honour being awarded to Nathan Sealey of Cowdenbeath Karate, of the Scottish Karate Governing Body.
