Wado-UK Junior Championships 2015
On the 27th June 2015, Wado UK held its 6th Junior Championships at the Woodford Sports Centre. It turned out to be the biggest entry so far with over 80 of our young students taking part. The competitors came from the Chikara Dojo, the East Hull Woodford Dojo, the Shinken Dojo, the St Nicholas Dojo and the Zanshin Dojo. As is always the case the competition was run entirely by our own members, with club instructors and senior grades doing the refereeing and judging, and volunteers and parents covering everything else off. As club instructors we have already made a commitment to our chosen pastime, but to see so many parents and family members sat at control tables, laying mats and loading vans is very pleasing. Everyone played their part no matter how small their role in making the day a complete success. We would like to build on this success now and encourage as many parents as possible to jump on board with these roles. Please let us know if you would like to, or indeed already do but wish to expand your responsibility. We would like more table officials etc. and are keen to run courses for both this and officiating if there is the demand.
The competition itself of course belonged to all of the youngsters taking part. This event was introduced to give all of our younger members the opportunity to compete close to home, and at a relatively small event. This we feel is important as the ones we travel to are often two hour’s drive away, and are much more intimidating if it is their first exposure to events of this sort. With the categories being sympathetic to this young and inexperienced group, we always see new faces on the podium. This is pleasing, but of course so is seeing our regular medal winners also. From our perspective it is not about the medals though, we want to see everyone walking away with smiles on their faces and a desire to return to competition at some stage in the future. This is why everyone gets a medal of participation at the beginning, we want them to enjoy the day, it’s as simple as that.
Well done to everyone who took part regardless of medal success coming your way or not. The most important thing is that you enjoyed your day, and your competition!
Of course we now move our attention to our next event which is the 7th East Yorkshire Open Karate Championships on September 27th. Unfortunately we still have issues to sort with regard to a venue, but rest assured the competition will be taking place. As soon as the venue is finalised we will be getting the details circulated not only among our group, but amongst the wider karate community also. Building on the success of yet another excellent event here at the Junior competition, we would love to see all our volunteers returning and doing us proud once again. Details will be with your club instructors imminently and of course on the website and in the newsletter.
Thank you all once again for the commitment and dedication which helped deliver a successful 6th Wado UK Junior Championships.
