Wado UK News 2010

December

Probably the last event and perhaps news entry on the website for 2010 is the addition of our Wado UK Presentation Evening. On the 10th December members once again met et the John McCarthy suite at the Hull University, for a night of celebrations. The night was once again a tremendous success and a full report can be seen by clicking (Here)

Our fundraising Bag-Packers were in action again on the 6th December. The group met once again at the Iceland Store in the NorthPoint shopping centre on Bransholme and packed bags for shoppers from 10am-4pm. The funds are to go toward a bus trip which is planned for the 6th March which will be to the Chojinkai Junior Karate Championships in Penrith Cumbria. Anyone who would like to go on this trip should register their interest with Tony Dent as soon as possible. All places will be on a strictly first come first served basis, with more concise details being posted on the dates page as soon as we have costed the trip.

Wado UK Squad Training

Marissa Dunn and her Cottingham Parks Dojo, played host to the latest squad day organised by Wado UK. The day was a great success with nearly thirty students attending the session. The first section covered Kata, with Tony Dent, and Andy Barratt working with the senior grades, while Steve Balaam-Reed, Paul Braid and Marissa Dunn put the other groups through their paces. The following sessions were split into two, to allow a rules section and Kumite section to run simultaneously. Paul Braid worked with the athletes while Tony Dent worked with those people wishing to gain a better understanding of the rules for competition. To finish, everyone re-assembled, where the athletes put their earlier practice into a more realistic competitive scenario. Those who had been learning the rules had the chance to put their new skills to the test also. All in all it was a great day.

Thanks to Marissa and the Cottingham Parks Centre for their help in organising the event.

This was the latest session in the EKF elite calendar and was as expected, a tiring day for the Wado UK duo. The day went well for our athletes, who will now look ahead to the next session in May.

Over the weekend of 5th-7th February, Turkey hosted this years European Championships. Wado UK played it’s part in proceedings, with Tony Dent being there as a Kata official. Tony passed his Kata “A” qualification in Madrid last summer and this competition would see the qualification ratified if he had a successful event. At the end of the three day’s Tony had shown himself to be competent and saw his “A” grade made permanent.

As for the English squad, they managed to win 1 gold, 1 silver and 5 bronze medals. One of the bronze medals came in the female under 21’s team Kata event. This was the first ever team Kata medal for England. A good result for the English squad and a good result for Wado UK! For a full report on England’s results (click here)
